placing EPS with 1-bit preview
Using Photoshop CS, I created an RGB file and saved as an EPS. In the save options, the Preview was set to Macintosh (1 bit/pixel). (actually, the image had been saved once earlier in Bitmap mode, then switched back to RGB later and resaved to a new file...that's why 1 bit preview was chosen).
This file will NOT place into either Illustrator 10 or CS...it gives a "Can't place the illustration" error with ID -11000
Amazingly, this file WILL place into Illustrator 8.
Same holds true if the EPS is made in Photoshop 7. Encoding (binary, ascii) doesn't seem to make a difference.
Thanks.

Re: placing EPS with 1-bit preview
Hi, Mike
I can't figure out why you would save a bitmap image as RGB, or an RGB as EPS, but that's neither here nor there...
I only tried it in CS, but it placed the bitmapped RGB EPS file fine. There was no preview as a linked file, but it was there when I embedded it. I tried it with embedded color profile and without, and with the file saved in ASCII, ACII85, and Binary formats. Same on all.
