PLACING TEXT FROM WORD

When I place a word doc with just some text into Illustrator, there are these cross symbols at the end of a lot of sentences and I have to go in and manually delete them. What causes it? How to prevent from happening?

Perhaps if you refer to the program by its proper name -- Microsoft Worst -- you will be less disappointed by its moronic idiosincracies. Just a hint.

Mac and Windows symbols are not the same. I have to fix alot of bullets from Windows files on my Mac.

The strange thing is with Arial on our Macs. Make a Registration mark and you better outline it. Looks fine, but go to print.
