    Default placing transparent gif/psd

    can you place a transparent gif or psd file into illustrator? My friend said she did it but can't remember how and I can't find anything on it and when I do it there is a white background. they are signatures I need to add to a name tag. Illustrator 10 osx

    Drag your image layer from a Photoshop open document to an Illustrator open document.

    Well, if it's just a black signature, set the image to the Multiply blend mode.

    GIF transparency isn't recognized on the artboard (at least I don't think so) -- but if it's a PSD file, are you sure the white area is transparent in the Photoshop file itself?

    Is the very bottom layer of Photoshop Transparent?

    if you can see the checkerboard pattern in photoshop, that is the area that should be transparent in illustrator...

    use this all the time instead of clipping paths and eps documents.

    What do you mean? I'd rather export a path to Illustrator, if I had one in the PS document to begin with.

    When you open a .psd file into AI, there should be a window that comes up to ask if you want the layers as objects or flattened. You should choose objects.
