Drag your image layer from a Photoshop open document to an Illustrator open document.

Re: placing transparent gif/psd
Well, if it's just a black signature, set the image to the Multiply blend mode.
GIF transparency isn't recognized on the artboard (at least I don't think so) -- but if it's a PSD file, are you sure the white area is transparent in the Photoshop file itself?

Did you mean the clipboard doesn't recognize the transparency?

Is the very bottom layer of Photoshop Transparent?
if you can see the checkerboard pattern in photoshop, that is the area that should be transparent in illustrator...
use this all the time instead of clipping paths and eps documents.

What do you mean? I'd rather export a path to Illustrator, if I had one in the PS document to begin with.

Re: placing transparent gif/psd
When you open a .psd file into AI, there should be a window that comes up to ask if you want the layers as objects or flattened. You should choose objects.
