Placing Word docs in InDesign
I use InDesign 2.02 on a PC, with Windows 98 Second Ed. Am presently working on a 400-500 page book. I seem to be unable to Place a word doc into my existing document, which I just spent three weeks editing and correcting. I keep getting the "No filter found" message. This is the first time I have had this problem; it has always worked prior to this.
This is now a second try, since it also refused to translate a Quark file (which worked for the other document) into InDesign. So I had to have the original Word doc emailed to me. I have edited it and cleaned it up, and now seem unable to Place it.
Please help quickly, as this job is to be done by the end of August (dream on). HELP!!

Re: Placing Word docs in InDesign
Resave the Word file as RTF.
Note that CS has a vastly improved Quark import filter, but you'll need
to move to Win 2K or XP to use it.

I thought it only imported Quark 3 files. Has this changed or was I misinformed?

I just read another post by you that answers my question. It says Quark 3 or 4.

Re: Placing Word docs in InDesign
This causes style issues, but you can copy/paste text from Word to ID
easily. Once in ID, apply the styles you *really* want and delete the styles
that came over from Word.
If you're copying graphics along with the text, say something because that's
a whole different aniumal.

Re: Placing Word docs in InDesign
Thanks, all. You've been a big help. I have converted the Word doc to an RTF file and it came over fine.
Now I have another problem. This document I am working on is apx. 450 pages. ID has gotten soooo sloooow. It sometimes takes a full five seconds for a change to be made (I'm editing).
This may be a simple problem of deleting files, but I have not used ID in apx. a year, and can't remember what files to delete. Also have just moved and am in temporary quarters without any of my manuals or books. So would appreciate a quick response on this (I'm sure) simple fix, or anything else you can advise to speed things up. The doc is almost exclusively text, with only two graphics on the cover.

Shirley
Not sure if this will help, but I seem to remember that if you are doing
simple Saves, then the new data just gets added to the end of the file
incrementally. In order to clean this up, try doing a Save As (to a
different file name if necessary) and see if that helps.
