I've never been able to get xmms to work with CDs. When I want to play cds,
I use 'workman'

Becase You already know , that workman is for playing CD, xmms plays
files and locations, I can only recommend You workman 1.3.5 (as
package), at least for Solaris 8 x86. Workman 4.0.1 works but with no
sound, You only see , that CD is read. Besides Workman 4.0 conflicts
with volume manager.
By the way, I have also compiled xmms with gcc, but I could play only
mp3 files. No Internet radio with ogg content. After downloading xmms
from www.blastwave.org, I can now receive ogg content from radio
senders. Super sound with usual Soundblaster ISA(but AWE32 ).

By the way, another media application , that works for Solaris 8 is of
course RealPlayer8. It plays not only mp3 music from Internet or from
files but also video with sound from Internet.
