Please Fix Repeating Regions in Nested Templates
I am disappointed that repeating regions still do not work in nested templates
in Dreamweaver 8. I believe it's probably common to use a repeating region to
do something like create a list of related links in a sidebar, which would go
in the master template, and then create nested templates for site sections.
(That's my situation, in any event, and it seems likely to be one others would
also encounter.) Those templates for subsections will not be able to use the
repeating region to create related links. I'm hoping others with the same
problem will add to this topic and encourage Macromedia to fix this defect in a
very good product.
Thanks

Re: Please Fix Repeating Regions in Nested Templates
Hi Murray,
Thanks for the pointer to the wish list. I thought I had looked for such a
thing before posting to the forums, but I guess I missed it.
My pages use a column on the right with sections of links, with titles and
links, such as:
Product Specifics:
Models and Specs
Data Sheet
Where to Buy
Support:
By E-mail
By Phone
My master template has a column on the right side which has a repeating
region, and in that repeating region there is an editable region (the title)
with a nested repeating region with an editable region (to create the links).
I'd like to create some nested templates that use that right column, but
because the repeating regions don't work in nested templates, I haven't been
able to find a way to make the nested templates work for me.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, but it seems like the best fix
would be for repeating regions to work in nested templates in the way you'd
expect.
Best,
Dennis

Re: Please Fix Repeating Regions in Nested Templates
I didn't read through the whole post - but let me ask this: Could you solve
your problem by not using nested templates? If so, tell me why you are
using them?

Re: Please Fix Repeating Regions in Nested Templates
Hi Murray,
My situation is that I want to create a new template which uses all the same
elements as my existing templates, and adds a well-structured repeating format
for page sections in the main content area of the page. It would not make sense
to put this area-specific repeating region into the master template because its
use is in a limited section of my site. Not using a nested template would mean
one of two things: duplicating the existing template and adding a new repeating
region (in other words, toss out the concept of nested templates and create the
need to replicate changes in the master template in its duplicates); or
creating a skeleton page people can start from, which tosses out the ease of
use of the repeating region in a template.
So, no, I don't see a way to get the advantage of a template without creating
a nested template. My problem is the problem nested templates were created to
solve. The broken repeating region functionality makes the nested template
concept's usability extremely limited, in my view. Maybe you can show me that
I'm missing an obvious solution that isn't a hack?
Thanks!
Dennis

Re: Please Fix Repeating Regions in Nested Templates
Have you considered making that repeating stuff into an optional template
region? This would allow you to show it on some child pages, and not on
other child pages, and thereby (I think) eliminate the problem?

Re: Please Fix Repeating Regions in Nested Templates

First, this is one of the options I mentioned, and is a hack. It means every> region? This would allow you to show it on some child pages, and not on
> other child pages, and thereby (I think) eliminate the problem?
time I want a nested template with a repeating region, I instead push the code
up into the master template, which becomes a do-everything template. It throws
away the concept of a nested template.
Second, in my first attempt to do just that, I put an option region around a
whole repeating region, and found that in the page created by using the nested
template, the repeating region was not editable, only showable or hideable.
There could be a solution, but it appeared on first impression that the
repeating region was broken in a different way. And if I can find a way to fix
this, it's still a hack.
Thanks, though.

Yes - that's what I'm trying to do. Nested templates are no walk in the
park.
<sigh> Please zip your template folder and enough of the associated files
that I can see what's happening and email them to me at forums at
great-web-sights period com.
