Please Help! Custom Photoshop shape in Illustrator 9? - Adobe Illustrator Windows

I created a custom shape in photoshop and am wondering if I can import it into Illustrator 9? I have a last minute rush job and am trying to save time from having to redraw it in illustrator. Thanks!...

    Beth,

Since all raster images are rectangular in shape (only a transparent background can look otherwise), make your background transparent in PHotoShop and save the image as a PSD. PLACE that in Illustrator and you'll "see" the irregular shape, although the bounding box will be the image's rectangle (only visible when selected and "show Bounding box" opted) . Illustrator allows transparency from PhotoShop with PSD format (only).

Probably Beth is thinking of Custom shapes you can create through the Make custom shape command in Photoshop.

In Photoshop 6 and higher draw the custom shape as a path:

    * Path Palette: Click the Make new Path button, then choose the Custom shape tool and draw the custom shape

    * Select the path with the Path component selection tool, copy and paste in Illustrator

    Beth,

Sorry, but somehow I missed that you are using Illustrator 9.0 (9.0.2 it should be) and I believe that the PSD transparency didn't come until Illustrator 10.) If you are talking about PhotoShop custom shapes, as Kurt indicates, then follow those directions. If you are talking about an irregular shape of an image, then you need to use the create a path of the outline you wish it to be, then either Save the file as an EPS with a clipping path, or do a Save As (or Export) Paths to Illustrator which creates an .ai file of the path (no stroke) that you can open in Illustrator 9 and apply to the PLACED raster file (any format) by arranging the path over the raster image. Give the path a stroke for easier visibility (it'll disappear when you apply it as a MASK).
