Please help! rpm got me into trouble. - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

rpm refuses to install required packages of VLC. It tells me that the package to install is installed already, but query or verification options (-q, -V) of rpm tell me that the package is not installed. rpm refuses to install required packages of VLC. It tells me that
the package to install is installed already, but query or
verification options (-q, -V) of rpm tell me that the package
is not installed. VLC main package does not install because it
sees the required packages as not installed.

--force option does not help. The sounds from the hard disk
suggest to me that a substantial amount of data is written
onto the hard disk, but the package stays "not installed".

The nonexistent (?) package cannot be erased with the -e
    option.

The situation is the same whether I log in as an user,
a superuser, or the root. The situation is also same whether
I start the installation from the package icon, from a menu,
    or from the command line.

I am using Red Hat 9. The system installed cleanly so I
expect it to be intact and correctly configured.

Don't NARRATE! Show the command. It is likely that you are lying
your socks off and giving the file name to the search command instead
of the package name. We can see if you let us see.

Then remove it. And reinstall it. But it is fine.

    DO NOT $&&&$&$$&&$$&$& NARRATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

VLC? Do you mean VNC, instead?

And what shows up in /var/log/rpmpkgs from your nightly cron dump? You
may be misunderstanding which part of the package is the package name if
they have "-" in them. Also remember, a package like
"bind-devel-1.1.i386.rpm" will be listed by "rpm -qa bind-devel". The
".i386.rpm" parts are suffixes not used normally as part of the package
    name.

Stay calm. Let's see what's going on.

What are the *full* names of the packages you're trying to install?
