pointing device on thinkpad

    Default pointing device on thinkpad

    Woody bf2.4 on Thinkpad570. I have "mouse" (that red nipple in the
    middle of the keyboard) working normally in X, but nothing when in
    text mode. I can't see anything obviously relevant on google. Can
    anyone point me in the right direction? I am particularly keen to
    have middle button cut-and-paste active - I hate copying long paths
    and filenames.

    TIA

    you need gpm running to get a mouse on the console. (apt-get install gpm)

    And you will then want to reconfigure x to read from the gpm device rather
    than directly from the mouse

    the console is a text based mode. The mouse won't be active unless u load
    drivers and all explicitely. u need to look at the gpm server.

    Aah. You don't happen to know exactly how that configuration should
    look? On installing gpm, it does
    Configuring gpm:
    Current configuration: -m /dev/psaux -t autops2 -Rms3
    Device: /dev/psaux
    Type: autops2
    Repeat type: ms3
    Do you want to change anything (Y/n)?

    Thanks for trying to help. Just for the record, that did not work.
    The thinkpad pointing device works fine in X set up as psaux+PS/2.
    /dev/gpmdata kills it completely. In neither case will it work
    outside of X. Hey-ho, so it goes.

    Not that it really solves the issue, but how about not using the console -
    just use xterms?

    To be honest, that is what I usually do. But I always set up text
    login, and when I log on as root, I try to stay that way. Also when
    I am configuring anything X or WM, I usually play safe and log out of
    X. And when something goes wrong and I cannot start a WM, then I
    don't want the added inconvenience of no mouse. Perhaps I've been
    spoilt by RH...

    I don't have your machine, I have a newer thinkpad with the little red
    pointer. But I use gpm and X works fine. On my thinkpad, my gpm.conf
    has:

    device=/dev/psaux
    responsiveness=
    repeat_type=msc
    type=autops2
    append=""
    sample_rate=

    Type msc above is MouseSystems Protocol in the XF86Config-4 file:

    Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Configured Mouse"
    Driver "mouse"
    Option "CorePointer"
    Option "Device" "/dev/gpmdata"
    Option "Protocol" "MouseSystems"
    EndSection

    I hope this is helpful.

    I dunno about you, but I would. =)

    Here's how I'm doing it (on a thinkpad t23, not that it really matters):

    /etc/gpm.conf:

    device=/dev/misc/psaux
    responsiveness=
    repeat_type=raw
    type=ps2
    append=""
    sample_rate=

    /etc/X11/XF86Config-4:

    Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Configured Mouse"
    Driver "mouse"
    Option "CorePointer"
    Option "Device" "/dev/gpmdata"
    Option "Protocol" "GlidePointPS/2"
    EndSection

    The key thing that you're missing is repeat_type=raw in the gpm.conf.
    Oh, and mine says /dev/misc/psaux, which is the devfs path. /dev/psaux
    is probably what you want on your system.

    good times,

    I use gpm-1.20 from the CVS, change the gpm executable in the
    /etc/init.d/gpm into /usr/local/bin/gpm

    And use this for my T30 (has red pointer and a touchpad at once!):
    gpm.conf:
    device=/dev/psaux
    repeat_type=imps2
    type=synps2
    append="-3 -S ''"

    XF86Config-4:
    Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Configured Mouse"
    Driver "mouse"
    Option "CorePointer"
    Option "Device" "/dev/gpmdata"
    Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
    Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
    EndSection

    Hope that helps.

    Best Regards.
