    Hi Ian,

The only dumb question is the one you don't ask. To undo a step with the
Polygon lasso tool, press the Alt button to temporarily disable the
lasso cursor. The cursor will change back to a pointer. Click with the
pointer where you want to set the next point of the lasso. The cursor
will change back and the lasso will be moved to the spot where you
    clicked with the pointer.

Gosh - I have always wondered about that too!

Thanks for asking and Thanks Linda for yet another pointer.

Anyway to back out of a step in this tool? In PS you can just press the backspace button.

Release the mouse button. Hold down the Shift key, press Alt, then
release the Alt key to temporarily bring up an arrow cursor. The
selection path will be reset to wherever you click with the arrow
cursor. The cursor will then revert back to the Polygon lasso.

    Hi Linda,

I'm not sure what this is supposed to give me. I'm looking at being able to step back once, twice, several times if necessary. Check out PS -- I'm sure you guys have a copy around (or you at least you should). Clicking the backspace key will allow you to step back as far as you want without stepping out of the lasso mode, thereby allowing you to adjust the intended lasso shape.

Not at all sure what you mean. In PS, if you use the lasso tool and press
backspace, the area within the lasso is cleared.

In Fireworks, you can just do Edit -> clear unless I don't understand you.

You said you wanted to backtrack. I described how. You didn't say how
many steps. Are you actually drawing with a selection tool?

    Who is "you guys?"

Why? I rarely use it and haven't felt the need to upgrade since version 5.

I don't draw with the lasso tools. I use the vector drawing tools.
