James;
No need to pay for the fix.
For Messenger Service ads:
You need to install or enable a firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q330904&
Disabling Messenger Service can be a good idea, but it does not solve
the real problem.
The ads are not the real problem, the ads are only a symptom.
The real problem is open ports that allow unwanted traffic into the
computer.
Disabling Messenger does nothing for the open ports.
The firewall controls the traffic.
Internet Connection Firewall will not work if you have AOL.
AOL is not compatible with Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
(ICF)
If you have AOL, you should contact AOL and/or get a 3rd party
firewall.
Disable Messenger Service:
Start/Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, click Services.
Go down to "Messenger".
Right click "Messenger" and select Properties.
Then under Start-up select DISABLE
Click OK and follow prompts

Greetings --
This a type of spam has become quite common over the past few
months, and unintentionally serves as a valid security "alert." It
demonstrates that you haven't been taking sufficient precautions while
connected to the Internet. Your data probably hasn't been compromised
by these specific advertisements, but if you're open to this exploit,
you may well be open to other threats. Install and use a decent,
properly configured firewall. (Disabling the messenger service, as
some people recommend, only hides the symptom, and does nothing to
secure your machine.) And ignoring or just "putting up with" these
messages and the problem they represent is particularly foolish.

popups
Hi, I have started to get popups from sites which don't
do popups (eg google, my bank's website). It's always in
a window exactly the same size, and always says this page
cannot be displayed, the url always is:
res://C:\WINNT\System32
\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm#http://ad.trafficmp.com/tmpad/ba
nner/itrack.asp?rv=3.0&id=2146&nojs=1
It happens seemingly randomly, about once in every 30
pages. I guess it's some bit of software I didn't want.
How do I go about finding out what is causing this and
then uninstalling it?
Thanks, Jamie

popups
Thanks, I see on that page they have the same site as the
one that my pop up is refering to. But I don't think that
that solution will work for me as the full url is
res://C:\WINNT\System32
\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm#http://ad.trafficmp.com/tmpad/ba
nner/itrack.asp?rv=3.0&id=2146&nojs=1
and a) I cannot add this to the restricted site list, and
b) I think that there is some bit of a software (ie
plugin?) doing this.

Re: Popups
Greetings --
Does the title bar of these pop-ups read "Messenger Service?"
This particular "sales method" is strikingly similar to the
"protection" rackets offered to small businesses by organized
criminals. Yes, it's a scam; no reputable business would need to
resort to extortion. Particularly since they're trying to sell you a
type of protection that is already available to you free of charge.
This a type of spam has become quite common over the past few

Bryan;
It is not a form of hacking.
Messenger Service is a valuable tool and of use to many.
It can also be a nuisance to those unaccustomed to it or how it works.

I have already disabled the popups on my computer, but I
continually receive these annoying little popups with the
heading of Messenger Service. I looked into it and found
out they originate from the XP program sending out my IP.
Could someone tell me how I get rid of these? I have

them received a popup for a porn site. Anyone have an
idea how I can/if I can disable this little feature they
added into the XP program? Thank you!

Receiving these Windows Messenger pop ups indicates that your computer is
not secure and vulnerable. You need to enable the built in firewall.
To enable XP's built in firewall, Open Network Connections, or right click
My Network Places and select Properties.
Right click the Dial-up or broadband Internet connection that you use and
select Properties.
On the Advanced tab, under Internet Connection Firewall, select the
following:
To enable Internet Connection Firewall (ICF), select the Protect my computer
and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the
Internet check box.

decent for starters
2) Search for a tool called XP-Antispy, this tool will give you the option
of killing Messenger service popups, and also allow you to control other
