Positioning DIV layer - Macromedia Dynamic HTML

I'm creating a staff/gallery page for a friends site which shows thumbnail images of staff members. Which, when clicked, reveals a hidden DIV containing a larger image and some text. This DIV needs to be displayed at a particular place on the page. It's perfect on Safari but appears 1px lower on Opera, Firefox and Netscape on Mac and is several pixels to the right and higher on IE. Please can anyone explain why and suggest a way to fix it? http://www.lee-evans.co.uk/people.htm...

    Your page contains a valid but incomplete doctype (unfortunately, this was
    but one of the ways in which DMX was a bit dim) -

    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">
    <html>

    Replace that code with this -

    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
    "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
    <html>

    and you will keep IE out of quirks mode (which may be contributing to your
    problem).

    See if that helps.

    Thanks Murray. I've tried amending the doctype as suggested but there's no change. I'd be grateful to hear any other suggestions you may have!

    Many thanks!

    Is the amended page at the same location?

    Hi Murray. Yes it is! The error is only about 1 pixel. Which is enough annoy
    me! It's 1px too far RIGHT on IE,windows , and on the Mac it's 1px too HIGH on
    Safari but perfect on Firefox, Opera and Netscape.
    I don't know what else to do!

    I think that this whole approach is flawed. Take a look at what happens
    when someone increases the size of their text display in the browser. It
    all comes apart then, sadly.

    But see if this looks better for you -

    Hi Murray. Thanks for your time on this! It now looks fine in IE but is now 1px
    too far left in opera,netscape and firefox and 1px left and high in safari. I
    realize there's a text display problem but their entire existing site has the
    same issue I'm not too concerned as I've only been asked to create this one
    page for them.

    I suggest you do this -

    Set it so that it looks OK in FF. Then use a conditional comment to reset
    so that it looks right in IE. Let Safari go....
