Powerbook dialing?
Often, but not always, when I wake my Powerbook 12" G4 from sleep, I
find an error (seemingly originating from Entourage) that Internet
Connect failed--device not found (that's a paraphrase; I never remember
to jot down the exact text). At this point, the Progress bar in
Entourage indicates that it is attempting to dial--"Dialing connection"
or some such.
However, I have a cable moden, and the connection method is set to
Ethernet. Indeed, if I next try to check my mail, it connects properly
(via Ethernet), and any automatic connection (I have a schedule set to
check for mail every 10 minutes) works.
Now:
1) I thought there might be virus or somesuch, but Virex has not found
anything.
2) the issue *seems* connected to Entourage--is is that app that says
it's trying to dial a connection, not, as far as I can see, some other
program.
3) it only happens when waking (I assume that no connection attempts can
be made while the PB is asleep), and even then not always
4) my only other thought is that some application is attempting to
register itself, or otherwise make some connection, but why would it
dial and not use the cable modem, which is how the connection is set?
I don't normally have a phone line connected.

there is a tiny timing window on wake when mail wants to read from the
POP server and the ethernet is still rubbing its eyes. The locations
nonsense detects the simultaneous lack of ethernet and desire to read
mail, mistakenly thinks you are on the road and starts dialling. Try
creating another location that does not know about the modem.
