There are several options if I want to perform a "Save As" and end up with a pdf file of some sort.

These are all ISO standard "subsets" of a PDF - PDF/X (ISO 15930), PDF/A (ISO 19005) and PDF/E (ISO 24517). Do a web search for more info...
