Preserving/replacing the AIPrefs file: 1st of 3 FAQ proposals

Posted: 08-04-2004, 10:57 AM
I believe I have found a suitable way to:

Create and use backup/custom AIPrefs files Amend corrupted settings without losing preferences (see subsequent topic) Change the default font (see subsequent topic)

My conclusion is that it is certainly worth including the AIPrefs file in your Illy toolbox. You may read a full version of how to work with it here (first hint in the list):
<http://www.bugge.com/Family-and-friends/Illy/illy.html>

I hope others will contribute; maybe this thread can even form the basis of a FAQ.

I have tried to make a summary in the second post (no one reads the first post), which may serve as a first draft FAQ.

I have used posts to present most of the contents, not to clog this thread with a monstrous topic text.

I have worked with this topic for quite a while, initiated by two intricate cases: my own, and one of the worst cases possible, Jacob Bugge "Default font in Illustrator CS" 6/13/04 12:31pm </cgi-bin/webx?14@@.3bb3dfe7/14>

The rules governing the default font have required a good deal of ingenuity to both establish and recognize.

FAQ proposal: Changing the default font.

To change the default font, follow the steps below; to find the AIPrefs file, see further instructions in the FAQ (presently: thread): Preserving/replacing the AIPrefs file.

This is a core summary; you may read full instructions with examples here
(first hint in the list, last part): <http://www.bugge.com/Family-and-friends/Illy/illy.html>

1) Open the AIPrefs file with a text editor such as Notepad (Illustrator must be closed);
2) Search for the current default font (Myriad if you have not successfully changed it);
3) Replace each occurrence by the desired font;
4) Save the changes.

In order to succeed, it is necessary to strictly observe certain rules, the main points being:

a) All font names must be without spaces and without possible prefixed font house names;
b) It may be necessary/possible/impossible to specify a font style; if used it must be added after a hyphen and be without spaces; in some cases another (false) name must be given to it.
c) Every unsuccessful attempt will bring back Myriad as default font.
