Printer default - Mac Applications & Software

Hello: Every time I open Mail (OS 10.2.6), I have to reset the printer in Page Setup to my one-and-only printer (an HP inkjet 970Ci). I have told the Print Center that this is my default printer, but the command doesn't get retained. I think several other programs also "forget" this, and try to send my print jobs off to empty space (with "Any Printer" showing up in Page Setup when the program is first opened again). Can anyone tell me how to get ALL my programs to use the inkjet automatically? Having always to go to Page Setup is ...

    Default Printer default

    Hello:

Every time I open Mail (OS 10.2.6), I have to reset the printer in Page
Setup to my one-and-only printer (an HP inkjet 970Ci). I have told the
Print Center that this is my default printer, but the command doesn't
get retained. I think several other programs also "forget" this, and try
to send my print jobs off to empty space (with "Any Printer" showing up
in Page Setup when the program is first opened again).

Can anyone tell me how to get ALL my programs to use the inkjet
automatically? Having always to go to Page Setup is tiresome. By the
way, I downloaded the latest driver from HP only a month ago, so I
expect it's still current (it had been out there a while).

You shouldn't need to do reset the printer selection each time. This might
be the result of a permissions problem. Open up Applications->Utilities->
Disk Utilities and run the permissions repair tool. If that doesn't help,
open up the console to see if there are any messages there and then
do a web search for the latest messages.

The following is from the Known Issues section of the Read Me file for
    the HP inkjet driver (2.2.1):

Mac OS X does not automatically select the printer specific Page Setup
settings for the selected printer. You may need to go to page setup
for each doent and select your printer. This will ensure correct
margins on the print jobs from your hp inkjet printer.
