    Default Printer fails to print

I've tried printing to my HP Laserjet6MP with ID CS2 and can't get a thing to print. The lights flash on the printer as though someones home...then they turn off as if everyones gone to bed. The printer monitor states the print was successful but no print samples appears from said printer.

Changing the print settings in the "Graphics" section.....
"Font download" to "none" gets a printed sample out, but all fonts go bang and it all looks poop.

Setting it to either "complete" or "subset" with or without the "download PPD fonts" box toggled causes failure.

If I export the file to PDF and try and print total success.

I'm running a G4 400mhz with 1gb ram, 100gb approx free hard drive space with Tiger OS. I have no printing issues using Quark, Illustrator, Photoshop or anything else I have loaded up.

Can anyone offer any advice please?

Initially, search this forum for HP or laserjet. They seem to be troublesome printers.

    'Nothing'?

'HP' brings up over 100 messages, 'Laserjet' forty-odd.

    For me, anyway.

Or are you saying you've found no solution in those messages?

    Kelly:

HP uses a PostScript emulator instead of licensing genuine PostScript from Adobe. As a result, we see fairly frequent posts from people experiencing problems printing to HP printers.

Here <http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc193ac/0> is a recent post on the subject from Dov Isaacs, Adobe's Principal Scientist for Publishing Technology. You won't find a more definitive source or concise answer.

Actually, the LaserJet 6MP was one of the last LaserJets with Adobe PostScript. It was a PostScript Level 2 printer.

However, "as is" it shipped with very little memory, probably not enough for graphically-rich output from InDesign, Illustrator, and/or Acrobat. As a 600dpi printer, the minimum memory needed to run PostScript reliably would be approximately 6 megabytes, but I believe that printer shipped with less, possibly 4 or 5 megabytes. Add another 8 or 16 megabytes to that printer and I suspect your problems will be gone.

Note that I have LaserJet 5M printers both in my Adobe office and at home and have had no problems printing from any application, no matter how complex the output. Both are equipped with duplexors, extra trays, AND with 22 megabytes of memory (6 MB came installed; I added 16 MB SIMMs to each).

I hear what you say regarding memory, but the document I trying to print at the moment is just lines and a system font....NO graphics.

But in saying that why does ID have an issue when in the past I've printed very large documents from Quark, photo's etc, without issue?

This is why I'm begining to question the software rather then hardware..ie the printer.

Can you offer anything else that might point to a resolution?

I have had the same problem on a 5550 color laser... just updated firmware to 29.19 and that seems to have resolved the problem.
