Printing error message "pstopdffilter"

When attempting to print certain pdf files I get a printer error that says - the process "pstopdffilter" stopped unexpectedly with status 1.

Mac OS X.4.7 with Acrobat Standard 7.0.8. I have rebuilt permissions, removed and reinstalled print drivers for HP Color Laser Writer 3500 and tried several other fixes suggested in other topics. I have also changed users and the problem still exists.

Ideas?

Is this a postscript printer driver or a non-postscript printer driver?

It is a postscript print driver as far as I know.

All HP laser printers generally have an HP derived printer language.
Only some of them have postscript drivers.

I am able to print most pdf files, it is just selected files that produce the "pstopdffilter" error message. Most files that won't print are ones I have made into pdf files after scanning them, or printing as pdf files.
