    Default Printing halftones

I have a problem in trying to print the halftones when using illustrator. It seems like the only way I can create a 55 lines per inch is when I print at 300 dpi rather than 600 or 1200 dpi. It gets me frausted because if I print at 300 dpi, my text and everything else is crap! I know how to print out halftones in photoshop, but in illustrator I don't. Can someone help me with a step by step process. Thank you!

Yes I know exactly how to help you, but I need to know what version of Illy you are using. Might help to know what you're printing to as well.

I hope you do come back Elgin. I really can help, as long as you're not using CS. They made a really big mistake by dumping riders in CS which makes it pretty much useless for me, but as long as you're using 10 or earlier (not too early <g>) I can help.

Sorry about the late response. I'm using ai 10. Basically I'm just printing out logo designs that involve a solid black and halftones. Maximum 55 lpi. Thanks!

Ok, in Illy 10 you need to attach a "Rider" to your file to over ride your printers default screen. Go: Filter/ Other/ Make Riders. This will bring up a dialogue box where you can attach screen information to your file. Once you've chosen your specs hit make. Be sure to save the Rider in your Illustrator 10 "Plugins" folder or it won't work. In Document Setup, uncheck "Use Printers Default Screen" and in Print Setup change "Application Halftoning" to "Allow".

BTW, you have to save the file before the rider is attached. Make sure you move the rider out of the plugins folder for the next job, or it will have the rider attached to it too.
