Default printing in acrobat faster than illustrator..

I'm printing pretty big 17"x22" files from Illustrator on the new Epson 4000 printer. It takes a very long time for Illustrator to send the file to the printer to print.. around 10 minutes.
However, if I save the exact same file as an Acrobat PDF, and print from Acrobat, it takes only a few seconds. Is this a bug in Illustrator?
I can't tell a difference between quality from either the Acrobat prints or the Illustrator prints, but it's irritating to have to load up Acrobat every time I want to print something.. rather than just print from Illustrator.

    Derrick ,

Try selecting all of the artwork and scaling it down by 50% . Then go into print setup and scale your paper size down by 50% . Then in print setup apply a 200% scaling factor and turn off Bitmap printing . It sounds stupid but it will probably work !
