Problem distilling .ps files with Distiller 7.07
I am creating high-res PDFs of a 156 page four-color magazine to send to our press. When I distill high-res .ps files created InDesign CS2 that contain more than six pages the distilling processes gets caught in a never ending loop and I receive the following error:
Distilling: 92-99.ps

Acrobat Distiller 7.0.5
Started: Saturday, October 14, 2006 at 12:31 PM
Adobe PostScript software version: 3016.102
CID support library initialization completed.
Please note that I can't use InDesign export to PDF as our press requires that I use Distiller spec'd to their supplied Distiller preferences. Has anyone experienced a similar issue and figured out how to prevent it?
Thanks.

Re: Problem distilling .ps files with Distiller 7.07
I seem to remember a problem like this when people were using Norton Utilities.
Are you using a virus protection program?
Are you able to distill non-high res images from ID? Can you export from ID to
pdf?

Re: Problem distilling .ps files with Distiller 7.07
Thanks for the response. After rebooting my system it now seems to work fine. No, I am not running Norton Utilities. It must have been a memory issue.

Re: Problem distilling .ps files with Distiller 7.07
You might have been attempting to distill the postscript without waiting
for it to fully spool?

Re: Problem distilling .ps files with Distiller 7.07
Jon, thanks. Yes, I had already figured out that I needed to wait for the spooling to finish. For some reason, Mac OS X fails to update the file size indicator in the finder (unless you click the icon repeatedly). I have also noticed that there is a limitation to the size of the .ps that Mac OS X will create. If you attempt to print a large page range to postcript in InDesign or Quark it will go through all of the motions of a successful attempt but the resulting .ps file is zero KB. This required me to print my 156 page magazine in .ps sections of no larger than 6-8 pages.

Re: Problem distilling .ps files with Distiller 7.07
I was aware of the 2GB postscript limit with Quark 4/5/6 (not sure about
7) - but not InDesign?
Can anyone else confirm this?

Re: Problem distilling .ps files with Distiller 7.07
Jon, I don't think the limit is Quark or InDesign specific I believe it is Mac OS X specific although I could be wrong...

Re: Problem distilling .ps files with Distiller 7.07
Robert,
Just did some poking around and you seem to be correct - it's an OS
problem - CUPs limitations ....
Cheers,
Jon
