Problem Editing PDFs From IDCS But Not From ID2
Most of our pages are prepared in InDesign 2 (all in Mac OSX) and sent to an Apogee server, which then creates PDFs. When necessary, PrePress guys edit the images using Acrobat version 6 (updated). As anyone who is familiar with the process knows, you do that by selecting TouchUp Object Tool, highlighting the picture to be edited, right-clicking and selecting edit image, which triggers Photoshop to open. No problems encountered except whatsoever. If the document is prepared in IDCS and also sent to Apogee server, color pictures open in Photoshop but grayscale ones give the warning sign below:
This PDF file contains no images in the color spaces or depth supported by this application.
We tested this on three Macs using IDCS and got the identical results in two different Macs using Acrobat 6. Color Management are off for IDCS, Photoshop and Acrobat. It's only the grayscale pictures in IDCS that have a problem. Any thoughts? I've searched the forum any topic similar to this, but I've found nothing.
Thank you.

Re: Problem Editing PDFs From IDCS But Not From ID2
It's unclear to me from your description: Is the error generated by the Apogee server or by Photoshop?

Re: Problem Editing PDFs From IDCS But Not From ID2
(Sorry for the delay in my response. I was off yesterday.)
Using Adobe CS, Middle East Edition. The error comes out as soon as one clicks Edit Image in Acrobat. It's Photoshop 8 that can't read it. The PDF is generated via Apogee server. PDFs from InDesign 2 are OK. Only the grayscale pictures in an IDCS-composed PDF gives this problem.

Arnold,
If you want to send me a PDF, I'm happy to try editing it in Photoshop 9.x (click my name for the address)

Re: Problem Editing PDFs From IDCS But Not From ID2
Peter,
I've e-mailed you sample files. I wanted to put the files in a place online so that others can also test them but I forgot the URL of the site David T referred me to long ago.

Re: Problem Editing PDFs From IDCS But Not From ID2
Arnold,
I was able to reproduce your grayscale findings with Acrobat 7 and Photoshop 8. With Acrobat 7, and PS9 on the Mac, things were even worse - Photoshop simply crashes! On Windows with Acrobat 7 and PS 9, Photoshop does not crash. I get a slightly different error message, but it still don't work.
I would say this is defintely a bug.

Re: Problem Editing PDFs From IDCS But Not From ID2
Thanks, Peter, for all the trouble.
I did some more tests and the instances when the grayscale pictures open in Photoshop is when I export from IDCS to the following Presets:
1. ebook
2. Screen
3. Acrobat 6 Layered
The error occurs when I export to Print, Press, PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-3, regardless of compatibility and standard.
Distilling in Distiller 6 also gives the same errors as in Apogee Server.
If it is a bug, perhaps nobody else stumbled into it because nobody tried correcting grayscale pictures in the PDFs. It's interesting to find out from those who are using InDesign 4 if the same behavior is still there.
