Problem: inDesign pdf in Apple's Preview
I think this is an inDesign problem: (pretty sure)
When I do a PDF export (lores or hires), and I drop that file over Apple's Preview, I get an error:
"File error", "Couldn't open the file"
I like Preview because it's fast and simple (typical Mac)
When I do this via Quark 6.5, the files are readable, but I don't like Quark
If I reduce filesize in Acrobat Pro, preview accepts the file.
Some time ago this was possible.
I've cleaned caches & permissions, did almost everything

It's not. It's a limitation of preview. ID can create some pretty
complicated PDFs including live transparency, interactive elements, etc.
As for Quark's PDF capabilities, I won't even go there.

Re: Problem: inDesign pdf in Apple's Preview
Thanks for your quick reply!
1. Then why was it possible once (a few weeks ago)?
2. Those are simple pdf's: no transparency, no interactivity involved.
Preview had no limitations whatsoever (except selecting text maybe)
I expected an "advertising" answer of some sort. I'm not that dumb!
You still could be right, but not with those arguments.
Problem with Acrobat Reader is the startup screen.
(time is everything, especially on a Mac).
We need a quick viewer with no hassle, hence Apple's preview!

Re: Problem: inDesign pdf in Apple's Preview
It's not an advertising answer...it's just a fact. If you want complete
compliance for PDFs stick with Adobe's products.
I can't tell you why the PDF in question is a problem, sorry.
As for time being everything, how much have you wasted already?

Re: Problem: inDesign pdf in Apple's Preview
Hello,
I have managed to determine the problem.
It's not InDesign, nor is it a Preview problem.
It's that damned Suitcase Fusion!
I made a new document with one element at the time.
X-1 output pdf. Opened with preview, no problem
some placed data: eps, then tiff, one at the time,
X-1 output pdf. Opened with preview, no problem
then transparency,
X-1 output pdf. Opened with preview, no problem
After that, a textbox.
X-1 output pdf. Can't open with preview. Error!
After that, Closed suitcase, Closed InDesign.
Opened the document again without starting Suitcase:
No problem in Preview!

Re: Problem: inDesign pdf in Apple's Preview
I've updated Suitcase, problem gone. I can use Preview again!
(wonder if that's good for the board?)
Anyway, it was an Adobe-related problem!
This was quality time, actually !
