Default Problem with an Illustrator File and Word Document

I'm using a PC with Win2000 Pro and Word 2000. Printer is a HP Deskjet 1120C (non postscript). I received a *.eps file built with Illustrator and want to use it in Word. The inserted file has a black background which should be clear. The document prints as it looks on screen. The file looks fine on the computer that developed the file. Is there a file that I can download so that I can use the *.eps file.
    Thank you

Word doesn't recognise EPS transparency and only postscript printers can interpret postscript files (Encapsulated PostScript - EPS). If you want a clear background then change the EPS file into a TIFF with a clipping mask in Photoshop or a GIF which is normally a web quality file.

    Karen,
Thank you for the feedback. How do I handle the file if I want a high quality file for printing.

I'm sorry, Karen, but clipping masks in TIFFs are completely ignored by MS Office applications.

Gary -- Ask the user of "the computer that developed the file" to save as or export to a Word-friendly, non-Postscript-dependent format. Have them read this:

Thanks Harron - tiff is still best for Word for high quality printing, however as Harron says, there will be no transparency.
You could still have a tiff with a white background and place it BEHIND text in Word. Open the file in Photoshop and SAVE AS a TIFF file. Check background is white.

High quality CMYK printing can't be done from Word as it is based as RGB. You would be best to create a high quality Acrobat file from Word converting colours to CMYK if it's going to process printing.

You are aware that you can make a color transparent (such as white) by using Word/PowerPoint Draw functions, don't you? Make your Clipping Mask and although the background will be white in Word, etc. by using the transparency ability in Word, you can make it back to transparent. You just have to remember that if there is any white within the image, besides the background, it'll also be made transparent.
