Problem with character palette and Helvetica + Helvetica Narrow
System: Illustrator CS, Panther 10.3.3.
This is how it should work: Say you have a string of Times Roman selected; your character palette contains Times in the Font field and Roman in the Font Type field. Select the Font Type field and press the letter B ... it changes to Bold. If you want to change to Bold Italic, keep typing b - o - l - d - space, and as soon as you press space, you get Bold Italic.
Here is where it doesn't work: Make sure you have both Helvetica and Helvetica Narrow active in your system and try the same scenario. Start with Helvetica Medium, select the Font Type field, and press "B" ... you get (well, at least *I* get), Bold Narrow right of the bat, and you can't get just a plain Bold to save your life.
Anyone else see this?

Re: Problem with character palette and Helvetica + Helvetica Narrow
Well, I'll try it in AI10 tomorrow, but I never use this way to select type. I'm on AI 9 right now from my PC, so I don't have Helvetica here.

Dee - Have you tried it? I'm curious to know of the behavior changed from earlier versions.

Re: Problem with character palette and Helvetica + Helvetica Narrow
It works in 10.03. I don't have Helvetica medium, though. I have Helvetica regular. I can hit N to get Narrow, but as soon as I type a space after I get Narrow Oblique and if I hit a space after that I get Oblique Bold. Only if I highlight Oblique and type b I get Narrow bold.
Now I know why I don't use this method to select type.
