Problem with fonts not sure if it's AICS or International
All of our department only has OS9.x.x and AI under CS.
Lately we've been having files coming in that we can read fully in Acrobat and not in AI10, if saved in .pdf. Mainly text issues. Or only text issues.
We have had more files come in which say "Created in newer version" and we try to place the file into a new document. We had some success with that also.
With the blank text thing, I have Acrobat 4 with Pitstop, so I have been successful with bringing the file into Acrobat and exporting it as a .ps file, going through distiller, and then opening it into AI10.03. But when the file is opening it states wierd prefexes to the font name. Which is O.K. I would then replace the font with mine (if I have it)
But I'm questioning why is it happening all of a sudden. It can't be international language thing, so it has to be AICS thing.
Which is cool that I can get around it sometimes!

Re: Problem with fonts not sure if it's AICS or International
If you're getting files created in AICS, you'll definitely have problems opening them in AI 8, 9 or 10 unless they were saved correctly.
You either need to set up a computer with Mac OS X and AICS, or you need to have your sender choose File > Export > Legacy Adobe Illustrator or Legacy Adobe Illustrator EPS and save it in AI8, AI9 or AI10 format.
Be aware that the, depending on how they save it, the fonts may get broken into "clumps" of letters because AICS uses a different text engine than earlier versions. You can select type with the Selection tool, and paste it into a new Illustrator text frame with the Text tool to recombine it.

You know Dee I think it is time that you get a station with OS X.x.x on it so there will be less problems and it will give you the opportunity familiarizing yourself and your company with OS X. As the older Macs are upgraded to newer stations you don't want your company to fall behind to far. You will like OS X.

Re: Problem with fonts not sure if it's AICS or International
Well, it's not my decision to make. My boss is afraid of workflow problems with our rips. And I'm am only one of 18 in our department.
I do think one of our art speckers are getting a new OSX so we can experiment with that.
But for my question, do you think that it's an AICS problem? If it is I'm surprised I found a work around at all.

Re: Problem with fonts not sure if it's AICS or International
It is not an AI CS problem. AI CS does not work in OS 9.2.2 AI CS is by default saved with PDF Compatibility and that is why you found this work around.
Your boss might be afraid but has no real choice if he buys a new piece of equipment it is not likely in the near future to have OS 9.2.2 or earlier drivers so the choice is not up to them anyway.
You will have OS X soon enough Dee. Then we will really be able to share your knowledge and expertise.
