problem with grub under winxp and rh9 - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

Hi, Got a problem on grub under winxp and linux 9. My box with winxp and linux worked fine before I reinstalled winxp. Then not suprisingly, it wiped out MBR and kicked out linux boot record. I was trying to reinstall grub to /dev/hda but no luck. Could anyone tell me what's wrong here? My partitions are winxp on /dev/hda1 and linux on /dev/hda2. The way I reinstalled grub is : 1. boot to rescue mode. 2. chroot to /mnt/sysimage 3. run grub-install /dev/hda my grub.conf under /boot/grub looks like: default=1 timeout=30 title Red Hat Linux root (hd0,2) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-8 ...

    Default problem with grub under winxp and rh9

    Hi,

    Got a problem on grub under winxp and linux 9. My box with winxp and
    linux worked fine before I reinstalled winxp. Then not suprisingly, it
    wiped out MBR and kicked out linux boot record. I was trying to
    reinstall grub to /dev/hda but no luck. Could anyone tell me what's
    wrong here?

    My partitions are winxp on /dev/hda1 and linux on /dev/hda2. The way I
    reinstalled grub is :
    1. boot to rescue mode.
    2. chroot to /mnt/sysimage
    3. run grub-install /dev/hda

    my grub.conf under /boot/grub looks like:
    default=1
    timeout=30
    title Red Hat Linux
    root (hd0,2)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-8 ro root=LABEL=/ hdc=ide-scsi
    initrc /boot/initrd-2.4.20-8.img
    title WindowsXP
    rootnoverify (hd0,0)
    chainloader +1

    then I rebooted my machine and I got the message "Grub load stage1.5"
    and "Grub loading, please wait". Then the machine just hangs for a
    long while with black screen and then winxp boots up, without any
    indication on linux's exsitence. I remember previously when the
    systems worked, I got "Grub load stage 2" and then a GUI menu to
    choose which OS to boot. But it doesn't show this now.

    I guess something wrong with the conf. But could someone please point
    out what I should do to make the booting correct?

    Thanks a lot.

    More than likely the winderz zapped the mbr. Find the /sbin dir of the
    linux install, and re-run "grub-install".
