Problem with layer palette
I open the layer palette from the "Window" option as I can't get into my palette well because my screen res is too big. The layer palette disappears as soon as I work on the image. How do I get the layers palette to stay open and on screen?

Have you considered increasing the monitor's resolution? The well would be doable if things appeared smaller and you would see more of your image on screen.
After you have the Layers Palette out of the well, I think if you go Edit>Preferences>General and check the box for Save Palette Locations you'll be in business.
