What version of Photoshop are you using? I don't think Photoshop included resolution information in PNG until version 7.
Also, you should be able to send them a TIFF (which has more reliable metadata support) instead of PNG.
And the document size hasn't changed at all -- only the resolution has changed. All the pixels are still there.....

Same difference, it's the same number of pixels in either case.
Multiply 300 X 4.18". The result is 1254 pixels.
Multiply 72 X 17.417". The result is 1254 pixels.
The pixel count is all you need to worry about.
Pack it. Ship it. They'll be just fine.
