Problem with text splitting into separate pieces
This seems to be related to opening older (v.9) Illustrator files using CS. When I open files containing text, I get the default message asking to update. I always update. The text is fine, complete with appropriate justification, leading, tabs, etc. I make changes and save. But the next time I open the file, my text has lost all of its "paragraph" characteristics (tabs are gone and sentences, even individual words, are broken into separate bits of text). This is a supreme pain in the neck. If I need to do ANYTHING to the text other than change a letter or 2, I basically have to retype the entire paragraph. Anyone else have this problem? What is the fix?
Thanks for any advice.

Kent:
Are you saving the files as CS, or as v9?
If you're saving as v9, the text gets broken up because 9 cannot handle text created with the new text engine in CS. Check the post near the top of the list about the new text engine, you may find your answer there.

Re: Problem with text splitting into separate pieces
Thank you Bert. Your question pointed me in a direction that I hadn't thought of on my own. I just figured out 2 things:
1. If I open a legacy file in CS and use the "Save" (ctrl-S) command, the file is saved in a legacy version, presumably the version that it originated. If I use "Save As" the file is converted to version CS. I just did a test. Two similar files, both v9. With one I used "save," and the other I used "save as." Voila! The "save as" file was correct. I am amazed that such a simple (and apparently UNDOCUMENTED!) difference means the difference between perfection and total chaos.
2. This so called "new text engine" is a piece of s**t. Text in Illustrator was always perfect. I am appalled that such an "upgrade" can be labled a "feature" and an "improvement."
Thanks again Bert.

Re: Problem with text splitting into separate pieces
Gee. OpenType fonts. Cross-platform fonts sounds swell. Too bad some of us already bought all the fonts we need for both platforms and never had any problems with them. Sounds like just another way for corporate high-tech giants to make money. It's like selling a DVD of a movie, then introducing a "special edition" 6 months later. Shameless. Better yet, it's like buying an expensive mobile phone that has everything EXCEPT the most important thing---good PHONE service. I'm not the best graphic artist, but I do alright. I've never felt limited by type capabilities of any previous version of Illustrator. I just hope Adobe doesn't put so many bells and whistles into their apps that I eventually can't draw a freaking picture. Then it will be time for me to explore other software. I apologize for my rant, but some Adobe software is certainly flawed.
I get that "cannot save because the file is locked" bulls**t like many others do, and Adobe consistantly refuses to take responsibility...and offer a solution. Frustrating.
