Are you ungrouping the image? Try holding down the option key and selecting the image with the pointer tool. It should respond as an editable image.

The image you are seeing is the EPS preview. You should be able to open it
with Illustrator or distill it with Acrobat Pro.

Your problem might be caused by corrupted Preferences file:

WARNING! If you open an editable EPS, make an edit and then do a Save
command, FH really does an Export to EPS routine that obeys your current
settings in your EPS *Export* dialog. If 'include FH doent' is unchecked,
then the Save command will _not_ include the FH doent (the portion of the
    file that makes it editable).

In this situation, FH ought to either save in exactly the same previous
hybrid format as the original file, or it should give a warning dialog, "Do
you really want to save as non-editible EPS?".

I find the 'Save as Editable EPS' routine so accident-prone that I avoid it
    altogether.

Judy, again you've saved my bacon (and me pulling my hair out). My wife (who
doesn't like bald men) and I thank you :)

Incidentally, in order to get back to a working Freehand file (which is why I
used the Editable EPS option) was to open the now-uneditable EPS in Ilustrator,
export is as Illustrator 8 and open that back into Freehand...

You're welcome. Glad to hear you still have your bacon, your hair and your
    wife. :-)
