Problems deleting EPS files

I recently upgraded from Illustrator 10 to CS in Windows XP. As I archive my files I normally delete them from my hard drive; however, I have not been able to delete or even move some of my Illustrator eps files. These files were created in previous versions of Illustrator (either 9 or 10).
I am getting an error message along the lines of "cannot delete, being used by another person or program. Close program using file and try again." I get this message whether another program is open or not, and closing other programs has not eliminated the problem. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Is there some preference I should be setting? I have not found an answer in my manual or in other places I have looked so any assistance would be appreciated.

I find that problem pretty often when I'm using Windows explorer in Thumbs
view: file gets locked by explorer.exe and there isn't much you can do
except using special programs such as "Process Explorer" to delete the file
handle.

My advice: switch to another view (list, for instance) and reboot.

Andrea,

Did you get these files from a backup CD perhaps. If so, then they have the READ ONLY attribute and you can't Save, Move, or Delete them until you change the attribute and remove the Read Only. You can do this collectively (multi-select the files) or one at a time by right clicking, Properties and unclick Read Only in Attributes.

I have encountered this problem before. I simply close all applications and reboot my system.

This seems to release whatever was holding the files and preventing them deleting for me.

Then I just go to the eps files and they always work normally.
