    Yep,

    You're obviously on a Sun.

If you have a real C compiler installed then alter your path statement so
that the directory where your compiler is comes before /usr/ucb/ or if you
haven't installed a C compiler (Suns don't come with one by default) grab a
    GCC package and install it.

For some annoying reason Sun shipped a stub CC in /usr/ucb whos entire
purpose was to tell you that you didn't have a C compiler

I'm still getting problems on this. I've got gcc installed in /usr/local/bin
and I've altered my PATH so that /usr/local/bin is before /usr/ucb. When I run
make I get the same errors as above. I've even removed /usr/ucb from my PATH
and this time the error I get is

    $ make
cd libgd && make -e all
    make[1]: Entering directory `/export/home/foxig/GD-1.19/libgd'
    cc -c -xO3 -xdepend -DVERSION=\"0.10\" -DXS_VERSION=\"0.10\" -KPIC
    -I/usr/perl5/5.00503/sun4-solaris/CORE gdfontg.c
    make[1]: cc: Command not found
    make[1]: *** [gdfontg.o] Error 127
    make[1]: Leaving directory `/export/home/foxig/GD-1.19/libgd'
    make: *** [libgd/libgd.a] Error 2

What else can I do to make it pick up gcc?

    Cheers

Looks like GD is expecting a function (or variable) to be present in
    libgd, and it isn't.

You're using GD 2.11, I presume? What is the libgd version you use? Did
you make sure that you used exactly the same options when you compiled
    GD?
