Problems installing kernel 2.6.1 - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

    Default Problems installing kernel 2.6.1

    Hi there,

    I've previously tried posting this message in linux.kernel but it never
    appeared (it's moderated). Was that wrong of me? Anyway . . . maybe this
    newsgroup then.

    I'm trying to install kernel 2.6.1 (I'm currently running Redhat 9, kernel
    version 2.4.20-8 on an i686-based system), following the instructions given
    at http://buildkernel.stearns.org/, which states:

    If you have an rpm based system (RedHat, Caldera, SuSE or Mandrake), here's
    how to get going:

    1. rpm -Uvh http://www.stearns.org/samlib/samlib-0.2-0.noarch.rpm
    2. rpm -Uvh
    ftp://buildkernel.stearns.org/pub/wstearns/buildkernel/buildkernel-1.06-1.noarch.rpm
    3. buildkernel NEWESTSTABLE

    Steps one and two work fine, but step 3 returns the following error (my
    apologies if I've pasted too much here):

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
    -- Setting kernel configuration --
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
    ---- Makefile has no reference to SMP=. Either this kernel only supports
    ---- uniprocessor mode, or SMP Mode is not set in the Makefile for this
    ---- kernel. In the latter case, it is probably set in the standard
    ---- configuration, coming up.
    ---- About to let you manually edit the Makefile and set .config

    ---- NOTE - If you do not have any changes to make, simply save and
    ---- exit. Please press enter when ready to edit Makefile.

    ---- About to set kernel configuration - this takes a moment to set up.

    Anyone any ideas? Help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    First of all, I am not familiar with the buildkernel tool and I guess
    that no one on linux.kernel would be, especially considering the fact that
    the doentation is only available in Word DOC format. Ouch!!!

    There are numerous pages on the web that explain how to get kernel 2.6
    working on RH9 and FC1. Here are a couple of pointers:

    http://thomer.com/linux/migrate-to-2.6.html (note the section on modules
    and respective tools)
    http://www.linux-sxs.org/upgrading/migration26.html

    Do you really need to compile your own kernel? If you have been working
    with a default RH kernel so far, I strongly advise you to install a kernel
    rpm from Fedora's development tree:

    http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/development/i386/Fedora/RPMS/

    You can find the module-init-tools there as well.

    Your specific problem seems to be a missing glibc-kernelheaders rpm. You
    can verify this with: 'rpm -qa | grep kernheaders'

    If this comes up empty, you don't have it and have to install it from your
    distro CDs or download it from the aforementioned link. It's called
    "glibc-kernheaders-2.4-8.XX.rpm" where XX is the package version number.
    On my (FC1 with 2.6.1) system it's glibc-kernheaders-2.4-8.36.rpm.

    Remove the two RPM packages you have installed, they are not needed at all
    and do not apply;

    $ rpm -e samlib buildkernel

    Next read the directions provided by Red Hat here, but do not do anything
    yet. You need to get your system ready to migrate to the new 2.6 kernels;

    http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/custom-guide/ch-custom-kernel.html

    Finally read this, it will help get your system ready for the new 2.6
