Default Problems outputting to PDF and PS

I apologize if this isn't the correct newsgroup for this inquiry but
    here goes.

I am trying to output textfile (from Appleworks) to either a PDF or
    Postscript under OSX.

I did this easily under System 9 by using the Adobe Virtual printer,
outputting to PS and then running it through Distiller up at Kinko's.

But OSX can do this automatically, or so I thought.

Problem 1: I tried outputting directly to PDF. While the file came out,
when I tried emailing it to people, they were often unable to open it,
getting a 'this file is corrupted' error. Odd note: this seemeed to
happen more often if I sent it to a Yahoo email adress.

problem 2: So I tried outputting to a postscript file instead. I
haven't distilled them yet but am noticing that the file sizes on my
current PS files are huge compared to what I used to get. A file that
would output as a 1.1 meg PS file under System 9/Adobe virtual printer
is coming out at 35.5 megs. I have no idea why this is happening or if
it will be fixed when I distill it.

Any help on eithe rproblem would be most appreciated, even if it's to
tell me to try a different forum.

    Thanks,
    Lyle
