Default Problems saving Layers and Styles

I am experiencing problems while saving a freehand document. I have got a
multilayer Freehand 9-document with defined styles for text and graphics. When
I open this with freehand MX under MacOS 9.2.2 it shows all the layers and
styles. Also if I save it it still has got all the layers and styles.

But as soon as I close the document, the layers are flattened, the styles are
gone and I cannot edit anytzhing anymore.

How comes? Is there anything wrong in the preferences?

    Thanks for any help

I recall that there is a bug in FH when Layers and Styles are in
the same palette. My Mac version of FH MX crashed a lot with this
setup. You could try separating them and see if that helps.

Thanks for the hint. But actually the styles and the layers-palette were
already seperated. So, as far as I think, the problem is not the layout of the
    palettes.

But I really wonder what the problem could be, it nearlly killed our
    newspaper-production...

I don't understand what is happening and what you're expecting to happen.
Can you clarify the problem? Do I understand this correctly?

    1. Existing FH9 format file containing layers and styles is opened in FHMX
    11.0.0.

    2. File is saved as FHMX file (not editable EPS) and closed.

Then what? Do you reopen the FHMX format file in FHMX and find that the
    layers and styles have vanished?

That's it. I save the document as FH (not editable eps, although I think it
also should work like this) and all layers and styles are gone. It looks to me
like an exported eps. It's not editable anymore at all. That's really
    annoying....

You mean that when you reopen the file it looks like an exported EPS
file? That is you see the preview image but can't edit anything?

It's the same view as if you importa locked eps. If you change the view to the
fast one (I don't know the exact English name) you cannot see any paths, you
just see one rectangle although it had many many paths before...

When you select the image in the flattened file, what does the Object
Inspector tell you? Is it an EPS, a TIFF or another kind of image?
