Problems with black plates not knocking out red plates in InDesign - Adobe Indesign Windows

IDCS2 v4.0 running on Win XP Pro v2002 SP2. I’m creating spot colour ads for regional newspapers using IDCS2 and some titles have appeared with the red banner on top of the black shape, even though the black shape is set to knock-out the red (i.e. not Overprint in the Attributes palette and Preferences - Appearance of Black - Overprint Black unchecked.) I’m creating spot colour ads for regional newspapers using IDCS2 and some titles have appeared with the red banner on top of the black shape, even though the black shape is set to knock-out the red (i.e. not Overprint in the Attributes palette and Preferences - Appearance of Black - Overprint Black unchecked.) I have checked my Separations Preview and everything looks spot-on. The majority of the titles I create these ads for have no problem with the files I send, just a few. It has been suggested that it may be a RIP-related problem at the printer’s end, yet when I was creating the same ads previously using Illustrator 10 the problem didn’t occur. The files are sent electronically via Adfast using their own pdf job options, which are set to ‘Preserve Overprint Settings’, so shouldn’t change any of my settings. In the meantime I am physically knocking out the red, allowing for a small amount of trap, but obviously would rather not have to do this! Has anyone else had this problem or can offer any help?

What are you using to proof the files? Some printers, even high-end Fiery RIPs, will substitue a rich black for true black to enhance output. I generally turn that feature off.

Hi Scott. We don't proof the ads to the papers as such - they get sent out weekly to around 50 different regional newspaper groups so I don't know what RIPs they're using. I know within InDesign, under Appearance of Black, you can select Output All Blacks as Rich Black/Output All Blacks Accurately under the Printing/Exporting selection. Are you suggesting I make sure that's set to Accurate Black? BTW I'm in the UK. Thanks, Sue.
