Problems with Dreamweaver page Designs
I am testing the Halo Left Nav design out of the box as it comes with
Dreamweaver. No modifications whatsoever. When trying to print the page, IE
(PC) crashes and closes down the browser window. Tested on Win2000 and XP with
IE6.0.
Firefox and Opera do not have problems. Is there a known workaround for IE?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I just finished a complete site based
on that design.

Re: Problems with Dreamweaver page Designs
Be aware that the navigation scheme used on that HALO design is flawed. The
mouse position is being constantly monitored, and this position is used to
determine if the subglobal layers are shown or not. When the page has a
slight vertical scroll, those positions should be changed to reflect the
scroll, but they are not, since the method used only reports the vertical
distance from the top of the browser viewport. If it were me, I'd rip that
whole navigation scheme out and replace it with something more robust.
I have never heard of a print crashing the browser, however. Can you post a
link to the page?

Re: Problems with Dreamweaver page Designs
Thanks, Murray, thas is too bad. It would be really difficult to make a
redesign at this point.
I am little frustrated though, that Macromedia includes a design that is not
fully tested or functional.
To test the browser crash you can just use the default installation out of
Dreamweaver or my design at www.aath.org.

Replacing that navigation is pretty straight forward, you know? I'd do
it....

For what it's worth, by having placed those images above the navigation, you
have made the 'slightly broken' problem with the navigation much more
noticeable....

Re: Problems with Dreamweaver page Designs
For what it's worth, your page crashes my IE, too - both in print and in
print preview. The bad news is that the HALO TwoColumnLeft Nav page does
not do either for me.

Thanks, I will see if your code modifications will help. I completely understand that I may break things when I make changes. But, again, the Halo design right out of the box crashes the browser, too.

Not for me, using IE6/FF on WXPPro.

Re: Problems with Dreamweaver page Designs
Just ran into this issue, and tried to search the Web to find a neater
workaround than what Macromedia suggests - but to my suprise there was nothing.
Now, by a little hacking I found the evil line in the CSS file which seems to
kill IE6: position:absolute in #pagecell1.
The following worked for me:
- edit the file emx_nav_right.css, section #pagecell1, to look like this:
#pagecell1{
position:relative;
top: 131px;
left: 2%;
right: 2%;
width:95.6%;
background-color: #ffffff;
z-index: 100;
}

Re: Problems with Dreamweaver page Designs
IE6 crashing when previewing any file which is based on the Halo design and is
longer than one page - I though that was the issue described in the initial
post.
The fix I have been able to find a description of was to disable the CSS for
the print media - which kills the page layout completely:

Re: Problems with Dreamweaver page Designs
Link me to a page where you get IE6 crashing, please. There is nothing
inherent in the HALO layout that would cause this to happen.

Re: Problems with Dreamweaver page Designs
Created a new page using Halo Right Nav design and put it on
sillypinguin.narod.ru. (This free hosting server adds a floating add banner,
but that does not make any difference).
This page consistently crashes my IE6 SP2 (XP SP6) when trying to print or
print preview it.
Nothing inherently wrong with this design - but it does kill IE6. Isn't this
what the thread started with, and what Adrian mentions in his article?

Re: Problems with Dreamweaver page Designs
That link is not working for me. However, I have worked quite a bit with
those halo templates, and have never had a problem with print or print
preview. I don't recommend you use them unless you are really comfortable
with HTML, CSS, and javascript.

Re: Problems with Dreamweaver page Designs
I finally found the answer after stripping the page item by item to see what is
causing this: margin-top: -1px; in the #siteInfo style cannot be handled by
printers. Set this to margin-top: 0px; and the pages will print fine. This cost
me a lot of headache ......
Maybe the distribution of the halo design should be changed to prevent others
to run their heads against the wall.

Re: Problems with Dreamweaver page Designs
I agree that you need knowledge of CSS to properly use the halo design. But why
distribute something that has an obvious flaw? The -1px top-margin is in the
original distribution and printer obviously have problems with that. I think at
least a tech note is in order if the distribution cannot be changed easily.
