Problems with editing text
Hello forum!
I need to go back into my Ills. file to edit text. When I select the "text" box, the box is visible, but I cannot edit the text. I ungrouped it, but that still seems to not work. I even tried to retype my word and edit from there, but I get the same problem of not being able to edit the text.
Did I chose some funky option that will not allow me to do this?
please help!
thanks

Re: Problems with editing text
Jin,
Is your text within a text frame? Is it in a container? Did you first click the text with the Select tool, then while it's selected click the Type tool and drag highlight the text you wish to edit?

Re: Problems with editing text
Bob-
I tried everything. It's very weird!
Yesterday I created the text. But now it acts like the text is not even there. I tried to "bring to front", and I tried to highlight it. I can select the text box, but when I then click on "T" to edit it, the text box goes away and acts like there is nothing to edit. I can expand and change the shape of the text box...I just can't edit the text.
:(

Re: Problems with editing text
Jin,
Use the Selection tool (black fill arrow) and click on the text. You should see the text block frame as a "bounding box" (even with Bounding box hidden, except then you won't see the bounding box handles, just the frame handles and text start and stop boxes which are large and white filled. Now click the "T" icon and be sure to clic on the underlined text, not just within the box. If you don't click on where the text is underlined, you'll still get the "insertion point" blinking "I" bar, but it'll start new text (and even though it'll look like it's in the same text frame, it's actually not even in a text block now, it's "artistic text" which is non-formatted. Thus when you just click on the underline area, you now are "in" the text frame and can move the insertion point with the arrow keys and can use Backspace, type, or whatever. If you wish to block "highlight" text you must put the curser where you wish to start the block (usually at the end character is best and work backwards) and with mouse button down, drag across the text/characters you wish to change. That text will then highlight and be replaced with whatever you now type with any hit of the keyboard. If none of this works and you are sure you are doing it as instructed, try deleting the AIPrefs file (check FAQ topic as to how).

Jln,
Try toggling Hide Edges (Ctrl+H).

Re: Problems with editing text
Harron, deleting the AIPrefs should also do that and since Edges might have been turned off by accident, it could also cure a bunch of other problems that might be there do to "other" accidents<g>.

Re: Problems with editing text
True enough, Bob.
It's just that until Illustrator gets savable workspaces (as in Photoshop), I consider trashing prefs an extreme measure. It shouldn't be the solution for so many problems.
Mr. 32's description was a classic case of Bounding Box ON with Hide Edges ON.

I thought of the Great Invocation too, from the very beginning, but I held my breath this time.
I agree that it is an extreme measure, especially if you are not very fond of Myriad. I have not tried to kill it to see what you get instead; Wingdings perhaps.

How refreshing to hear someone finally say it.
