This is what kernel 2.4.21-ac4 reports on my Promise card:

Jul 7 19:06:26 giant kernel: PDC20269: IDE controller at PCI slot 00:08.0
    Jul 7 19:06:26 giant kernel: PDC20269: chipset revision 2
Jul 7 19:06:26 giant kernel: PDC20269: not 100%% native mode: will probe irqs later
Jul 7 19:06:26 giant kernel: PDC20269: ROM enabled at 0xdffe0000
    Jul 7 19:06:26 giant kernel: ide2: BM-DMA at 0xd800-0xd807, BIOS settings: hde:pio, hdf:pio
    Jul 7 19:06:27 giant kernel: ide3: BM-DMA at 0xd808-0xd80f, BIOS settings: hdg:pio, hdh:pio
    ....
Jul 7 19:06:27 giant kernel: hde: Maxtor 6Y120P0, ATA DISK drive
    ....
    Jul 7 19:06:27 giant kernel: ide2 at 0xe800-0xe807,0xe402 on irq 19

My box is an Athlon 1800+ with a MSI KT3 mobo using DDR266 RAM.
    Never had any problems.

This is what hdparm thinks of that drive (system was under medium load, hence the somewhat lower than usual values!):

    hdparm -Tt /dev/hde

    /dev/hde:
    Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 0.76 seconds =168.42 MB/sec
    Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 1.63 seconds = 39.26 MB/sec

So what's the problem with those Promise cards ?

I get that message too, but setting the appropriate values in
    /etc/sysconfig/harddisks changes that:

I get the full transfer rates off both drives.

Huh?? I don't get it! RedHat 9 does not even see the Promise
controller (not the one that comes with the motherboard, the
ATA100 PDC20265, and not the one that comes with the Maxtor
    6Y120P0, which is an ATA133 TX2 PDC20269). The /proc/pci
does show both devices, but Kudzu does not see them (don't
know if the Setup does, but somewhat I dunno... Been reading
lots of reports of RH's setup not recognizing them... Hmmm,
now that I think about it, I would feel really dumb if I try
it and setup simply recognizes the card ;-))

I don't see much difference in our setups (well, my motherboard
is much older -- I have an Athlon Thunderbird 1GHz on an ASUS
A7V motherboard -- but still). Also, the extra card is the same
(I have the exact same model of Maxtor drive, and I assume we're
both talking about the controller card that comes with the drive)

    ????
