Default Proportional content to page size reduction ID2.0

    Dear all,

I would be grateful for the solution to the following problem.

I have designed an English book on InDesign 2.0. The page size is standard 193 x 265mm. The 'text box' size is 142.606 x 212.606mm. Within these boxes (there are approx. 250 pages) lie different sized text, and tiff illustrations.

Having completed this book, the author now wants the page size to be 188 x 242mm instead. Arrgghhh!!!

Can you tell me, if it is even possible, how I can reduce the size of the text and illustrations IN PROPORTION to the new page size? As if every page just shrunk by 5%-odd.

In Photoshop, this is easily done in 'transform' (even text). Please tell me it's possible in InDesign 2.0!

    Forever in your debt!

I don't remember ID 2.0 but check unde the layout menu and see if
there's a setting to allow layout adjustment. If so, enable it and then
change the page size in document setup.

If not, create a PDF and place that page by page in a new resized document.

This would be far easier in ID CS2.

Sorry, forgot to mention that you'll need to scale each page at this
stage of the process. Much easier if it was scripted but again, ID 2.0
is pretty old so I wouldn't count on finding a lot of help.

    Thanks.

ID2 does have the layout adjustment you mentioned. It proportionately resizes the text box - but not the text!!

Do you know how to resize ALL text (differing sizes) proportionately?

    (I wish i had idcs2 - i'm a visual designer by trade!)

Talk to your printer, we (printer) routinely scale print-ready pdfs in the imposer program or (less efficiently) print to pdf at final scale....hopefully, it is proportionally similar.

    Thank you.

I did consider that. The new proportion is not exactly the same but very similar.

Is scaling pdfs routine generally, or just at your print house?

I guess it is general....we use preps to impose, not the latest version, but I dont think the ability to scale pdfs is limited to preps, so it would be worth asking.

If I were you, I would print to .ps and distill (I don't think you can scale on direct export from Indesign, hopefully someone else here might enlighten us), as postscript/distiller workflow is not desirable. And then use the 'place multiple pages' script in IDCS2 or download it for other versions to automatically place on pages and re-export as pdf for printer if that is your workflow with the printer.

Alternatively, I would probably want to avoid the distiller part and I would export to pdf, use the script and scale each placed page as required. Would be a bit tedious, but reliable output. Its a shame you cant set scaling as an object style characteristic.

Slight improvement.....set a frame at the desired final size (the page size), paste each page into it and scale to fit (cmd-opt-shift-e). I think that will work off the top of my head.

You are right about that, Phil, but I wonder why you are suggesting a second step of placing each page in a new ID document, and creating a PDF from that. If you simply print to Adobe PDF (or to a PS file for Distillation) at the desired reduction, the Distilled PDF will be the right size, won't it?

Sorry, I skipped a vital part... the initial 'print to' was to allow the OP to scale to the (virtual) printer, which is easier than scaling a placed pdf page by page. The second step is unnecessary as you pointed out, Peter....(brain twist!)

Hopefully, Henri's book is simple enough to be put through a .ps/distiller workflow without issues.
