Publishing Question proper use of Volume and Issue
I am working on a series of publications that will come out on a Bi-annual basis, or, maybe annually, I'm not sure yet.
I do not know the actual publisher's definition or use of 'volume' and 'Issue.'
I assume that the first publication will be volume 1 and issue 1, but from there on, how many issues and when does it ratchet up to volume 2?
Just wonder if anyone here has formal knowledge of this.
TIA,
Ken

Ask the publisher. If that's you, then whatever you say goes.
If it were up to me, I'd decide how many issues make a volume by imagining haw many would stack up to equal a large phone book, then round off to a reasonable number or time period. for a semi-annual, 5 or 6 years might do it.

Re: Publishing Question proper use of Volume and Issue
for me the year would be the volume the issue would be how many times it was published.

Re: Publishing Question proper use of Volume and Issue
The volume is how many total years such as volume 2 would be the magazines second year. The Issue would be the number of issues per year.

Re: Publishing Question proper use of Volume and Issue
Do you need to have both volume and issue numbers? For a biannual publication, it seems overkill to me, and for an annual publication it becomes ridiculous. You'd have vol 1, no 1; vol 2, no 1; vol 3, no 1; etc. Why not just use consecutive issue numbers and the year:
no 1 (2006); no 2 (2007)
or issue and season (or month) and year if it's biannual:
no 1 (Autumn 2006); no 2 (Spring 2006)
no 1 (March 2006); no 2 (September 2006)
(PS. I'm in the southern hemisphere and we say Autumn down here.)

We say autumn or fall. But I guess in the southern hemisphere you don't say fall or you would fall off the bottom of the globe. ;-)

Re: Publishing Question proper use of Volume and Issue
Can I just point out here that there is no 'top' and 'bottom' in space, the globe is represented that way up because it was invented by someone from the northern hemisphere!
It is the same reason clocks go 'clockwise', it is the same direction as a sundial in the northern hemisphere... in the southern hemisphere, sundials go the other way, so if clocks were invented here, they would go the other way!
