Punch out text? - Macromedia Fireworks

I have a background pattern across the top of my web page comp image. I am trying to put the company name on another layer and then punch that out and add a drop shadow so it looks like the name of the company is cut out of the background. I don't know if I explained this well. Is there a way to do it? Thanks...

If you want to punch it out of the background pattern at the top of the
    page,

    1) the background pattern needs to be a Fireworks pattern in a vector
shape because you can't punch a vector object through a bitmap.

    2) put the text on the same layer as the patterned background.

    3) Select the text and choose Text > Convert to Paths.

    4) With the text still selected, choose Modify > Ungroup, and then
Modify > Combine Paths > Join.

    5) Press shift and select both the background pattern and the text and
choose Modify > Combine Paths > Punch.

    6) To make it look like a cutout, use an Inner Shadow.

You don't need to punch it. Just fill your text with whatever color you
want to "show through" and add an inner shadow.

It worked! I had to use a drop shadow instead of an inner shadow to get the
    effect that I wanted. Thanks!
