"Punching" a vector image with another image?
I am a fireworks user normally but I've got some print projects in the works that required Illustrator...so I purchased CS.
Anyway, in Fireworks there is a 'punch' command that combines two vectors and does just that, makes a 'punch'. I've tried using the Pathfinder commands in Illustrator but it seems to create some type of a mask other than actually alter the vector paths of the image. Is there a way to do what I want?
Thanks!

Use your pathfinder pallet and either Expand after your operation or alt click on Minus Front, or whatever you're using.

Click the 2 paths, right-click and select "make compound path" to punch.
