Pushing the Envelope....
I am a neophyte Illustrator user. I'm trying to figure out how to use the Envelope command to make type conform to a particular shape, however when I try it the type goes wacko and partially conforms to the shape with spikes sticking out all over the place. Can this be done and if so how? Illustrator 10 MAC OSX.
Thanks

Re: Pushing the Envelope....
1. Type your type.
2. Draw your closed-path shape.
3. Select both type and shape and go to Object - Envelope Distort - Make with Top Object

Re: Pushing the Envelope....
Depending on the shape this may not always give you exactly what you wanted. The more complex the envelope the more likely you'll get wacko type and spikes. Also, if you use U&LC instead of all caps it will distort to the height of ascenders and descenders, not to x-height, so it will look wacko. You may need to adjust your top shape to something simple and then make adjustments. You can adjust the top shape while it's live to get it close, then expand it to get outlines for fine-tuning.

Re: Pushing the Envelope....
Try also using the Simplify command on your envelope shape BEFORE you apply it. The number of points and the kinds of anchor points can affect the contents of the envelope. Having a simpler and more efficient bezier path will go a long way in ensuring that envelopes appear as expected.
