Q: allocating RAM to an app in OS X
I've only been running OS X since May when I got my FP iMac.
The other day I tried to increase the RAM allocated to an app
(specifically the Apple DVD Player) but when I opened up the info pane
for the app I found that unlike earlier OS versions there was no way to
specify how much RAM should be allocated to the app.
Is this something that is no longer needed in OS X? Or is there just a
new way to do this?

OS X handles memory all on its own. If an application such as the DVD player
needs more RAM and it is available, OS X will allow the application to use
it.

structures in. With OS X, the system dynamically allocates each
application as much memory as it needs at the time.
It's a bit more complex than that, but that's essentially the situation.
