Quark 6 or InDesign - Mac Applications & Software

I've been a PageMaker user since the Aldus days. I used it for all my word processing needs. It was simple enough to use as a text processor but flexible enough to use more creatively... special formatting, graphics, etc. But, alas, it's days are over. I'd like to get rid of Classic altogether, and PM is about the only reason I have to still use it. I'd be interested in your observations about the relative merits of InDesign and Quark. One consideration is being able to open all of me 1000s of old PM 6.5 and 7 docs. thanks heron ...

    Default Quark 6 or InDesign

I've been a PageMaker user since the Aldus days. I used it for
all my word processing needs. It was simple enough to use as
a text processor but flexible enough to use more creatively...
    special formatting, graphics, etc.

But, alas, it's days are over. I'd like to get rid of Classic
altogether, and PM is about the only reason I have to still
    use it.

I'd be interested in your observations about the relative
merits of InDesign and Quark. One consideration is being
able to open all of me 1000s of old PM 6.5 and 7 docs.

    thanks

I think that consideration alone says you should go with InDesign.

So Quark won't open PM 6.5 or 7 files?
If that's a fact, it pretty much seals the deal for ID.

Unless they've added PageMaker import ability to Quark 6, and I don't
recall reading anything to that effect, the only way to open PM
doents is to buy $190 software from Markzware.

There are lots and lots of good reasons to pick InDesign over Quark.
That just happens to be one of them. :-) Enjoy, you won't regret making
    the switch.

That makes it a no-brainer. InDesign.

(and I say this as someone who uses Quark more than InDesign!)

I don't think QX (even v.6) will even TRY to read PM7 files, and it
never did that great reading PM files in general.

The trouble with Quark is that over the years they've progressively upped the
price of Xpress to such an extent that they've priced themselves off the
market. So, unless you are upgrading from a previous copy of Xpress, it's
gonna put a huge dent in your wallet!
