Quark 7 Won't Create PS File
I can't get the option to save as File in Quark 7 so that I can distill in Distiller 7.
I am using Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger) and the directions indicate choosing the PDF printer and then the "Save PDF as Postscript" option from the drop-down menu... but there IS NO drop-down menu with that option. Am I missing something? I prefer to let Distiller distill my postscript files vs. using an "Export to PDF" option in Quark 7.
Any help would be much appreciated!!!

Re: Quark 7 Won't Create PS File
Go to print menu., Then when menu comes up click on "create PDF" or "PDF". Then Choose Create "PostScript from PDF". It's doing no such thing. its using built in Distiller engine to create a PostScript Document. Fellow from Apple was either off his meds or drinking too much coffee.

Re: Quark 7 Won't Create PS File
I tried going to the print menu and choosing Adobe PDF 7.0 as my printer, and again as my PPD (under "Device Options") - and there is still no option anywhere to "Choose Create PostScript from PDF"... I have been working on this for hours before trying a post in this forum. I previously used InDesign on a PC so I am having some difficulties but I understand the basic concept - I simply can't find the option anywhere in the Print Menu or the Export to PDF menu. Help!! Deadline is drawing near!!!

Re: Quark 7 Won't Create PS File
I have just spent 2 hours in the Quark Forum trying to find an answer. They haven't responded to my registration so I can't post a question (Adobe responded immediately). Wow - interesting how many people on the Quark Forum have switched to InDesign!! And how many of them recommend it! Wish my boss had read some of that before purchasing Quark 7. Major dissapointment... InDesign has so many cool features that I expected to see in Quark 7.. but they just aren't there.
Meantime, I STILL need to solve my postscript problem so I would appreciate any other insight...... Thanks.

Re: Quark 7 Won't Create PS File
Michele,
I think there are two ways to create a PostScript file from Quark 7. I can't tell you which will work better (but I bet Jon Bessant will tell us if he pokes his head in to this thread):
(1) To get to the choice pjonesCET is talking about, click the Printer button at the bottom of the XPress Print dialog box. Click through the warning, and click OK. On the OS-level Print dialog box which appears, click on PDF at the bottom (this is in Mac OS X 10.4) and choose Save PDF as PostScript.
(2) If you want Quark to give you the PostScript file which it usually discards before converting using the File > Export Layout as PDF option, you must choose the PDF Preferences. Choose QuarkXPress > Preferences > Application > PDF. In this preference, choose Create PostScript File for Later Distilling. Then when you use the Export Layout as PDF choice, it should create a PostScript file.

Re: Quark 7 Won't Create PS File

THANK YOU! Your second option worked. Believe it or not, I do not have the PDF button on the bottom of the Print dialog box which gives me the choice to save PDF as PostScript. I have no idea why it is not there. We just installed both Quark 7 and Mac OS X 10.4 last weekend so we are working out the bugs. In the meantime, this option will work for me.
Next problem: I do not have the "Set up Watched Folders" option in Distiller so right now I have to manually tell it to Distill everything. Any suggestions?
Thank you both for your help. I tried to get help in the Quark Forum but they have yet to send me an email authorizing my registration log-in!

Re: Quark 7 Won't Create PS File
I ve tried to explain it. I'll have to let someone else come along.
I'm going to try one more time.
Doesn't make any difference if Adobe PDF7 or regular print Driver.
While looking at Document Go to Print ....
Next when window opens there should be a choice
Preview (may not be on Print menu of OSX.4)
Save as PDF
Fax
Print
Cancel
OSX.4 for may be laid out as
Save as PDF
Fax
Print
Cancel
Choose Save as PDF (Click)
Opens a new menu.
Choose Create PS (Postscript file) from PDF <click> or
Create Postscript file from PDF <click>
window opens with name of file with the extension added .ps
example document.ps .
Choose desired location to save.
Save file.
<click> means once you highlighted selection click on mouse.
IF you still can't get it. I give up. Someone that can explain better than I, please help.

I see that you have found a way. Glad someone could help.
Don't know why you do not have a choice that mentions PDF in the Print Menu. That is odd!

Re: Quark 7 Won't Create PS File
Update-
Looks like my missing PDF button is universal across my computer, so it's an OS thing. The other computers in my office have the PDF button in their print menus - and we all have the same OS, so now I am really confused. My guess is that it is a plug-in that is missing on my machine so that's what I am going to try to investigate. I was a PC user until 2 months ago so it's all Greek to me....

Re: Quark 7 Won't Create PS File
Michelle, did you update Quark to 7.0.1? This could be the cause of your problems. A co-worker told me 7.0.1 is for Intel-based macs only. If you did update, I understand you can just drop the new quark application folder (7.0.1) into the trash, and keep the 7.0 folder.
Good luck.

Nope, It's 7.0. I have to wait for my boss to come back (probably tomorrow) and tell him about my plug-in theory (which I have no idea if I am even on the right track!). It's been very frustrating - one person tried in vain to help me by painstakingly explaining every step to get to that PDF button - and imagine my surprise when I found it on 3 of the computers in my office but not mine!! Go figure....

Re: Quark 7 Won't Create PS File
Steph - No, I don't have 7.0 Pro (Acrobat) but my problem is with Quark 7.0. I've written Quark support but they told me to use the Create PDF button - which I have already explained to them TWICE that I don't have... big help there (NOT).

Re: Quark 7 Won't Create PS File
When you have Distiller installed, why don't you use the "Adobe PDF 7.0" printer? This driver generates a PostSCript in the background and saves the PDF a defined Destination.

Re: Quark 7 Won't Create PS File
Believe it or not not all Print Press equipment uses PDF. Also Its actually faster to create a PS file then drop that file on Distiller than it is to use the Adobe 7 Printer Driver.
When using the Adobe Driver the following takes place:
Document is sent to Distiller internally to Create the PS file. While doing this it runs some checks to make sure everything is Okay. The PS file is hidden.
Next It is then run through again and this time the PDF file is made. Once again the file is checked to see if okay.
Next The PS file is deleted.
Then finally the PDF appears.
If you Create a PS file (what ever method) its created and saved.
You drop this file on Distiller it assumes the ps file is okay since that what it sees. So it imediately create the PDF. (Of course it checks to see if the PDF is Okay. But because it was presented directly with a PS it doesn't go through the PS check nor the PS Distruction.
Advantage. Much Faster.
Slight disadvantage. You have a PS file to deal with. But even that could be an advantage, because your client might need the PS and you would have it.

Re: Quark 7 Won't Create PS File
Good point
So here how it works.
When you open the XP Print Dialog, you have click on the button "Printer…".
That opens the standard OS-X Printer Dialog. There you find the pull down menu in question.
Also a very good way is to hold the PostScript file for later Distilling in the PDF Setup of XPress. This prevents the automatic PDF generation using Jaws RIP and saves the generated PS file to a destination to be defined and you can use the "Export to PDF" Function.

Re: Quark 7 Won't Create PS File
Thanks for all the input - my initial question was how to create a postscript file in Quark since I was missing the PDF button in the print dialog - which gives you the option to save a postscript file. Thanks to a post from Steve, I found a way to work around that and create the postscript file without that button.
Today I finally found out what happened to my PDF button. I was logged in as the System Administrator on my computer (which I am) and when I logged in as a user, the PDF button magically appeared again. I don't know which forum I found this suggestion in - Adobe, Quark or Mac OS - because I cut and pasted the type onto an ongoing word document of different suggestions. So I can't give credit where it was due... but THANK YOU nonetheless!
