Query with variables - Microsoft SQL / MS SQL Server

Hi, I need to retrieve an specific value from a column whose name it's stored in a variable (cName) I want the result of the query to be store in the variable NewValue This is my query (it's simplified from my original query, but it has to have this format): select NewValue = cName FROM #tmpDeleted The problem is that after running the query, the value that I get in NewValue is not the value of the column cName but the name of the column. Default Query with variables

    Hi,

    I need to retrieve an specific value from a column whose name it's stored in
    a variable (cName)
    I want the result of the query to be store in the variable NewValue

    This is my query (it's simplified from my original query, but it has to have
    this format):

    select NewValue = cName FROM #tmpDeleted

    The problem is that after running the query, the value that I get in
    NewValue is not the value of the column cName but the
    name of the column. How can I resolve this problem without using other
    temporary tables?

    For example, if my table is like this:

    Field1 | Field2 | Field3
    5 10 16

    and cName = 'Field2'

    after running my query I should get NewValue = 10, however I get
    NewValue='Field2'

    Thanks
