Default Questions on Filter and Effect resolution with Placed/Linked images

The Abobe pubs and references seem to be rather imprecise when describing Filters and Effects. Some discussions treat them as differing only in there ability to be undone or modified after application. Others imply a distinct separation between the two.

Adobe information states that "Illustrator embeds linked images if you apply a filter to them."
Does this refer only to capital "F" Filters, or to both Filters and Effects?

I've applied a gausian blur "Effect" to a linked .psd file but it still shows up as a "Linked Image."

    What am I missing here?
    -------------------------------------------
    Also:

At what resolution is the embedded image and its filter result? Are they always identical?

Can an image at one resolution have an effect (say a drop shadow) at a different resolution?

Is resolution determined by the Document Raster Effect Settings prior to image's placement or can its final resolution be changed after placement by changing the Document Raster Effect Settings?

Can I create an Illustrator document using the lower 72 ppi setting and then send the file for output at the 300 ppi setting? Would some elements output to the higher resolution and others not? I so what determins which element gets 300 ppi and which doesn't?

First of all, it would be helpful to know what version of Illustrator you’re using. I’ll assume it’s 10.

Generally, any time you see Adobe refer to filters, they’re talking about capital F filters, as opposed to Effects. Filters cannot be applied to Linked images, only embedded ones, and they actually modify the pixels of the embedded image. Effects apply and Appearance to an image, Linked or Embedded. This appearance can be further modified or completely undone at any time - it is “live.”

Resolution of applied Effects is generally separate from the resolution of the image, and you can set it under the Effects menu - Document Raster Effects Settings.

You can create a document at the 7s ppi setting and change it to anything you like - any Effects you have used will update to the new res. But image resolution is independent from this.

OK I have a further question with regards to your statement Gary that "image resolution is independent from this". Are you saying that document raster effect settings will not affect the final RIP'd result out of InDesign 2? I've seen other post the sound like (no one has been specific) if you have a low raster effect setting on something like a vector based box with an ill 10 supplied drop shadpow that the final printed image will look blocky like would be expected from a low resolution (72ppi) image.

So which is it, raster effects settings only affect art in Illustrator or it can affect art along the entire chain, including the final printed image?

My understanding is that whatever you have set in Documant Raster Effects Settings will be the resolution for any raster effects in the document when it is saved, and all the way down the line from there on.
